Community and Mental Health
My Experience with Online Communities in Crypto
The crypto world is a wild ride… For me, it started with excitement—the thrill of being part of something big. However, as the market moved up and down, that excitement often turned into stress.
I was constantly chasing the next big opportunity, but I quickly realized that I needed a connection because I could not do it all on my own. Therefore, I began seeking out online communities, and that’s where my journey took a different turn.
The Positive Side…
Connection and Support
When I first entered the crypto space, I was still trying to grasp what crypto was exactly. My close friends could not precisely explain it, and my family was unfamiliar with it or thought it was too risky.
I felt like I was navigating this complex and volatile world alone. But then I discovered online communities dedicated to crypto—forums, social media groups, and chat rooms where people worldwide came together to share insights, ideas, and even memes.
Suddenly, I wasn’t alone anymore. Therefore, I found myself drawn deeper into these spaces.
In Lost Connections, Johann Hari explains how vital social connection is to our mental well-being. He emphasizes that feeling connected is essential for happiness and resilience and that disconnection can be a significant cause of anxiety and depression.
This really resonated with me because, in many ways, finding an online crypto community felt like reconnecting. It gave me a space to share my worries during market crashes and celebrate wins when things went well.
That is when I realized these communities weren’t just about crypto—they were about support, shared goals, and feeling part of something bigger.
I’ve seen firsthand how people in these groups support each other, whether by answering questions, providing encouragement, or simply being there to share the experience.
During moments when market volatility seemed overwhelming, the community was like a safety net. People would post messages reminding everyone to breathe, stay calm, and remember the bigger picture.
Nonetheless, even with all this support, I realized that sometimes, the pressure of always being connected could be too much.
The Dark Side…
FOMO and Constant Connectivity
Alongside the community’s benefits come certain challenges that I believe can affect mental health. One of the biggest issues I’ve faced is the pressure of constant connectivity. In Digital Minimalism, Cal Newport discusses how being constantly plugged into the digital world can increase stress and anxiety.
He describes the importance of stepping back and finding balance, which I’ve found challenging.
Crypto never sleeps—the markets are open 24/7, and news can break anytime. Therefore, being part of online communities means I’m always just a notification away from the latest update, often leading to feelings of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out).
I have lost count of how often I’ve stayed up late scrolling through discussions or checking my phone first thing in the morning to ensure I wasn’t missing anything important. But this constant connection, while exciting, has also been exhausting.
Newport’s concept of digital minimalism has helped me reflect on how to find a healthier balance. Therefore, I’ve learned that it’s okay to take breaks, unplug, and not be available all the time.
I started setting boundaries—muting notifications, taking weekends off from crypto updates, and focusing on other activities that brought me joy. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it for my mental health.
Balancing Connection with Well-Being
Being part of an online community in the crypto world is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it has given me a sense of belonging, friendship, and support during good and bad times.
On the other hand, the constant flow of information and the pressure to keep up have also increased my anxiety. Therefore, I’ve had to find ways to balance these two sides.
To balance these two sides, I’ve found it helpful to approach my involvement in online communities with intention. I’ve started being more selective about the groups I join and limiting my time in them.
Instead of feeling pressured to keep up with everything, I focus on the connections that genuinely make me feel good—the ones that uplift me and help me grow, rather than adding to my stress.
In Lost Connections, Hari writes about the importance of meaningful relationships, which has stuck with me. It’s not about having the most connections; it’s about having the right ones.
Therefore, I’ve started striving for quality over quantity in my crypto connections—a balance between staying informed and mentally healthy, sharing the journey, and protecting my peace of mind.
Community as a Source of Strength
The crypto space is unpredictable, and I think we can all agree on this. It can also be easy to feel isolated amid all the uncertainty. From a personal experience, however, it’s also a space where we can find community, support, and shared purpose.
Nonetheless, I realized I had to be mindful of how I engaged with these online communities to make the most of this. As such, by focusing on meaningful connections, setting boundaries, and taking care of my mental health, I’ve made the most of crypto’s community aspect while minimizing its downsides.
